Challenge
Niger faces severe economic challenges with a significant portion of its labor force employed in agriculture. However, only 0.2% of agricultural land benefits from irrigation, limiting productivity. The challenges include low literacy rates among farmers, high costs of sophisticated irrigation systems, and limited access to electricity and non-solid fuels in rural areas.
Description
Tele-Irrigation allows farmers to control their irrigation systems remotely, saving time and physical effort. The system uses solar or wind energy, and can be connected to various water sources. It provides real-time meteorological data to help farmers optimize irrigation. The kit includes a solar station, pump, water distribution network, and telecom equipment, controlled via mobile phone.
Outcomes
Implemented across 150 farms, impacting 450 households. Reduced fuel pump usage and waste water by over 60%, increased farm productivity, income, and school attendance among girls. Won multiple international awards for innovation.
