OverviewContributors

Challenge

When the Government (of Indonesia) revoked the subsidy for kerosene, the price of kerosene went up by 400 percent, and catching fish with kerosene lights became uneconomical, especially for individual fishermen with limited money. Most of these fishermen were forced out of their traditional livelihood.

Description

LED light technology has now become more practical for applications in the grassroots environment, as it is easy to use, robust, and offers a wide range of applications. One of the promising applications is to be used as a fish attractant for night fishermen, since LED lights can be equipped with spectrum selectors to attract different fish species. Its superiority compared to other lights offers higher productivity, thus superior economic viability.
