Challenge
1 in 16 students in Kenya can access and afford the textbooks they require for classroom study. Teachers also face similar challenges with the logistics of textbook distribution, especially in off-grid areas, which is nearly impossible to overcome. The unavailability of basic learning resources significantly impacts literacy and numeracy progression among students and limits teacher support in Kenya.
Description
In Kenya, there are more mobile devices than radios, and more than 90% of the population uses mobile money, with 78% accessing the internet at least once a day. These devices have the potential to revolutionize the education sector through the distribution of learning content via smartphones. With publishers eager to overcome distribution challenges, an e-reader application with a mobile money wallet offers a viable solution. Kytabu allows users to rent digital curriculum textbooks at low costs, providing enriched content such as audiobooks and subject-specific videos created by local teachers.
Outcomes
1. Reduced the cost of textbooks significantly by allowing rentals by the hour, day, week, or month. 2. Increased access to educational resources for students and teachers in Kenya, especially in off-grid areas. 3. Facilitated the use of digital finance for educational purposes through mobile money integration. 4. Supported national curriculum by providing approved educational content. 5. Enhanced learning experience with audiobooks and video snippets created by local teachers.
