Challenge
In the last ten years, various institutions across Pakistan, including the government, have attempted to introduce solar cookstoves to off-grid communities but failed. After conducting a pilot study to test clean cookstoves in Bedian - an off-grid village 20 kilometers southwest of Lahore - the team gained a deep understanding of the challenges associated with promoting clean cookstoves in Pakistan.
Description
Jaan Pakistan is focusing on developing the right product and innovating in distribution, marketing, finance, and communication to promote the adoption of clean cookstoves. The startup indigenizes and modifies globally established cookstove technologies to meet local needs, engages women entrepreneurs for distribution, collaborates with schools for awareness, operates a cross-subsidy business model, and advocates policy change.
Outcomes
Women and children under five, who are the worst affected by solid fuel fumes, stand to benefit. These innovations have the potential to positively impact 55% of Pakistan's population (111 million people living in off-grid communities) by reducing fatal respiratory illnesses.
