Challenge

The World Alliance for Patient Safety (WAPS) based at the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that tens of millions of patients worldwide suffer disabling injuries or death due to unsafe medical care annually. There are an estimated 234 million surgical procedures done globally each year, with a peri-operative death rate of 3-17% in industrialized countries, and estimated to be even higher in developing countries.

Description

To improve implementation of patient safety guidelines in surgical theaters and ICUs, coupled with a comprehensive safety program to promote and improve patient safety culture. Indus Hospital will pilot a low-cost, easy-to-implement radio-frequency identification (RFID) mobile health solution utilizing RFID tags for patients and open-source software on RFID-capable cell phones for health workers.
