Challenge

BIPOC-led small businesses, particularly those that are considered low-income and low-wealth entrepreneurs, face systemic barriers to capital due to historical disinvestment, limited access to traditional financing, and structural inequities in the financial system. These businesses are critical drivers of economic empowerment, yet they are disproportionately underfunded, making it harder to sustain operations, grow, or respond to financial shocks.

Studies show that BIPOC entrepreneurs receive significantly less funding than their white counterparts, with Black and Latinx businesses securing only a fraction of available loans and investments. Without access to flexible funding, many of these businesses struggle to remain viable, let alone expand their impact. When these businesses lack support, it affects not just the entrepreneurs but also the low-income communities they serve, reducing employment opportunities, wealth-building potential, and access to vital goods and services.

The B:Side Small Business Growth Grant provides unrestricted, low-barrier capital to overlooked businesses, ensuring they have the resources to stabilize and grow. By directly investing in these entrepreneurs, we fuel local economies, create jobs, and empower historically excluded communities, contributing to a more equitable financial system.

These updates will be light-touch and designed to avoid burdening recipients. However, they will be in-depth enough for B:Side Fund to provide the following metrics to the ICC.

  • To ensure transparency and demonstrate the effectiveness of the program, B:Side Fund will provide impact reports to the ICC at 30, 60, and 90 days post-grant disbursement. These reports will highlight the program’s reach, grantee progress, and key outcomes.
