Challenge
Post-harvest losses in sub-Saharan Africa result in over 20 million metric tons of grain lost each year, valued at over $4 billion.
Description
WFP trains farmers on post-harvest handling and provides a 50% subsidy on airtight silos. The private sector manufactures, distributes, and sells these silos. The project aims for self-sustainability.
Outcomes
In Uganda, over 110,000 farmers trained, 100,000 silos ordered, 70,000 sold. Farmers saw more than 98% reduction in post-harvest losses, 3X income increase, better food security, improved nutrition. Replication efforts underway in Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Tanzania, Mali.
