Youth Asset Mapping

Challenge

Youth often lack knowledge about the resources and opportunities available within their communities, leading to a negative perception of their local area and limiting their potential for positive community engagement.

Description

Youth asset mapping enables participants to document all places and activities in their community, leading them to discover businesses, institutions, and other resources. This results in the expansion of knowledge about local assets and empowers communities to share correct information. Youth can focus on the positive aspects of their community which promotes a more optimistic mindset about future opportunities. Assets that are mapped can be used by local community groups to plan activities, by workforce development teams to identify potential locations for youth employment, and to build resilience within target communities. Additionally, asset mapping results in youth learning new skills (like spatial thinking, collaboration, and leadership) while learning how to use technology to help their community and promote positive youth development.
