Challenge
In post conflict and under resourced communities women and girls often miss out on the opportunity to even basic education. Access to education is a human right, and WGEF believes that when a woman learns to read and write, her whole world opens up and possibilities are created. Literacy positively impacts their autonomy, security, income and self esteem.
Description
WGEF's literacy program has been operating for 10 years; serving over 4600 women who attend classes two times per week, receive lunch and child care for one child for 8 months. This type of support enable women the opportunity to grow in confidence and has a direct impact on their income, communication, and mobility. Our program is completely free, consistent and relevant, encouraging liberty and empowerment.
Outcomes
In our latest comprehensive survey, done in collaboration with Oxford University in 2017, highlighted the critical outcomes, including: self-esteem, increased income, better household communication, increased parenting skills, mobility and accessing resources. Literacy encourages a more complicated human experiences such as autonomy, participation and voice.
