Agriculture is facing challenges in Kenya, largely due to low education levels among farmers, unreliable agricultural extension services, and unpredictable weather patterns. Solar-powered SIM-based solutions are vulnerable (power intensive, hard to water proof, theft).
Description
ViPiMo utilizes LoRa technology to offer low-cost, low-power consumption data loggers that can connect to multiple sensors like soil moisture and weather stations. Data is sent to the gateway, which is then relayed to applications and platforms for further analysis and predictions.
Outcomes
Successfully tested LoRa data loggers and gateways across 5km range; pilot setups running at three utilities in Kenya; plans to expand to low-cost agricultural market; improved decision-making for farmers via data analysis and predictions; custom Android apps developed for agricultural interfaces
