OverviewContributors

Challenge

Desertification, climate change and land degradation have a strong impact on the main levers of economic growth, social cohesion, stability and security of the Sahel-Saharan States. The recurrence and resurgence of impacts despite various control action plans, recalled the urgency of a regional approach based on a common commitment, and concerted actions. The Heads of State and Government of Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan and Chad, referring to the decision of the 7th CEN-SAD Summit of 1 and 2 June 2005 in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) set up the Great Green Wall Initiative (IGMV), endorsed in 2007 by the African Union in the Great Green Wall Initiative for the Sahara and the Sahel.

Description

The project aims to produce 20,000 plants including cashew and other trees, employ 10,000 young people and women, create micro-businesses, engage in poverty reduction strategies, cultivate eatable seeds, and encourage the Chadian state to establish a fruit juice production plant. Currently, the initiative has planted 114 trees, with plans to scale to 20,000 plants by 2030.
