Teaching at the Right Level in Zambia

Zambia

Teaching at the Right Level aims to improve basic literacy and numeracy skills of primary school students in grades 3–5 in Zambia. The Zambian Ministry of General Education, in partnership with UNICEF, J-PAL Africa, Pratham, and IPA Zambia, will implement the TaRL model tailored for Zambia, supported by teachers across all government and community schools.

Challenge

Lack of basic literacy and numeracy skills among primary school students in grades 3-5.

Description

Teachers assess learners in literacy and numeracy, regroup them based on ability, and teach using learner-centred activities. Teachers receive support from mentors who provide feedback, advice, and check assessments. Mentors meet regularly to discuss performance and challenges.
