OverviewContributors

Challenge

People live mainly from their activities in the field. Due to climatic changes and bad agricultural practices (monoculture, use of chemicals, etc.), little by little the lands were degraded until they were no longer fertile. People are deprived of their main income and thus remain in extreme poverty, looking for alternatives and jobs outside the region to survive.

Description

The development of a sustainable bamboo plantation in Mexico will take advantage of the extensive demand for premium carbon credits and insufficient bamboo supply in North America.

Outcomes

Development of a greenhouse and planting of 80 hectares of bamboo. Agreement with 27 local families to rent land for 30 years. Production of 2,000-4,000 bamboo plants per week, with scaling plans to create a sustainable forest of 600 hectares.
