OverviewContributors

Challenge

Provision of free preschool education to children who have lost one or both parents from AIDS or are from extremely impoverished families.

Description

At the end of each term the students are assessed and teachers identify the areas of strength and weakness, which are then passed on to parents. During the school holidays, the program visits the students' homes to discuss performance and support the families. Teachers have targets after every 12 month period where their performance and achievements are discussed and targets outlined.

Outcomes

Buwenda Pre-school was the first SPE pre-school to be built and officially opened in March 2003. Kyabirwa Pre-school was built thereafter. Both schools were then refurbished in 2007. An additional classroom was built at Kyabirwa in 2013 and maintenance works are ongoing every year.
