Shikaya Facing The Past - Transforming our Future

Facing the Past supports teachers to develop young people who are compassionate, active, and critical thinking democratic citizens. Using various historical case-studies, young adults in a Facing the Past classroom learn to combat prejudice with compassion, indifference with participation, and myth and misinformation with knowledge.

Challenge

The program aims to address prejudice, indifference, and misinformation among young people by supporting teachers with resources and training.

Description

Low-level evaluation is conducted through focus groups. Formal evaluation has occurred through an American partner that was funding research for the study of three classes monitored over five years. The study looked at how studying content in a Human Rights curriculum translates to changes in behavior outside the classroom.

Outcomes

The program has grown exponentially from 30 teachers undergoing training per year in 2003, to 344 in 2012. It has spread from Cape Town to the rest of the province and then on to Free State and Gauteng.
