ShareTheMeal (STM) is the first mobile app to crowdfund the fight against global hunger. It is one of the most efficient and innovative tools ever developed by the United Nations World Food Programme to engage millennials in the fight against hunger. The idea is simple: with a push of a button and 50 cents, every single smartphone user can feed a child for a day.

OverviewContributors

Challenge

Intervened in places where hunger is alarming, due to various reasons: Lesotho - where stunting affects 40% of children and 1/2 of the population lives below the national poverty line; in Jordan and Syria - resource-poor, food-deficit countries with very limited agricultural land, no energy resources and scarce water supply. Currently fundraising for Lebanon, for Syrian refugee children, who are facing the great risk of malnourishment due to the conflict, displacement, exhaustion of family income.

Description

ShareTheMeal is developed to be simple and to provide a smooth and hassle-free donation experience, thus fitting the interests and requirements of digital natives. With a push of a button and 50 cents, every single smartphone user can feed a child for a day. Users can easily see where the money go with every donation and monitor the progress made collectively towards a specific fundraising goal. With ShareTheMeal, we are making the fight against hunger mobile, transparent, and social: Donations are mobile only, and our product is designed to be simple, allowing users to donate anytime, anywhere. The app is transparent because it tells users exactly which program of which country we are supporting; it shows our beneficiaries and exactly where they are located. The UN WFP guarantees that every 50 cents feed a child for a day. The app is integrated with Facebook to incentivize friends to donate together.

Highly rated on App Store (4.9) and Google Play (4.7), with multiple global features from Google and Apple. 4. Won the Interactive Innovation Award at SXSW and the Webby People’s Voice Award. 5. Significant media coverage and celebrity endorsement. Currently, the app is in its growth phase, aiming to optimize user experience and performance through A/B tests and new features like direct beneficiary donations and in-app virtual reality.
