Challenge
The problem with out-of-school youths in Indonesia is that they are mostly unemployed and they cannot find formal jobs because they do not have high school certification. This situation puts the out-of-school-youths in a very disadvantaged situation; they are already disqualified from the job market before even trying. Several reasons why out-of-school youths in Indonesia do not go back to school include opportunity cost, limited information about prep school, and being already late to pursue education.
Description
Ruangguru helps them to study so they can graduate with good scores and equip them with employability skills. With Ruangguru products, they can access Ruangguru material for free anytime and anywhere, especially when they need to prepare themselves for the graduation exam. As for the employability part, Ruangguru developed a specialized curriculum that incorporated a blended learning model. Students were also provided access to group-chat based learning facilitated by online facilitators. The majority of the learning process takes place online. Students can access the app anytime and anywhere and have access to study with online tutors every day. The discussion about employability skills also happens online. The program lasts 10 months, with the first four months focused on exam preparation and the remaining months on an intensive program for employability. Students are then invited to an offline event for practical skills training and job application assistance.
Outcomes
Ruangguru Digital Bootcamp has successfully helped underprivileged students acquire high school certification and employability skills. This has enabled them to secure formal employment and pursue higher education. The program has also created a scalable and replicable model that can be expanded to reach more beneficiaries.
