Challenge

While governments have made tremendous gains in boosting school enrollment, the quality of education remains dismal in most developing countries. In India, primary school completion is 96%. However, the majority of students graduate primary school without learning basic skills and the rate of academic achievement in is declining sharply. In 2010, 70% of 5th graders could do basic division. In 2014, the number declined to 45% (ASER, 2014). Our solution addresses the poor quality of education delivery in this context to improve learning outcomes.

Description

We have developed a novel tablet-based learning platform that provides children with dynamically tailored adaptive content suitable to their individual learning level—using daily practice and testing to master each topic before advancing to the next one. The platform runs on inexpensive tablets and does not require constant electricity or Internet or computer literacy among teachers. Auto-generated metrics allow teachers to target students most in need of attention in real time. The software modules have been integrated with the Indian education board math curriculum, promoting smooth classroom integration. Given an environment where neither teachers nor parents expect children to do homework, this intervention drastically boosts practice.

Outcomes

The Adaptive Learning Platform's imagineMath app is designed to improve math learning outcomes for both school settings and remote individual learning. The App Store app continues to be widely utilized by students, helping them master topics through tens of millions of lessons. Additionally, we are developing apps on the platform for other subjects to empower students.
