Challenge
Landslides are the third most deadly natural disasters on earth, killing over 300 people every year globally. The number of fatal landslides in India is higher and further aggravated due to climate change. 15% of India’s landmass is prone to landslide hazard, including areas like Western Ghats and North East Himalayas. However, we lack an effective low-cost landslide early warning system. Lack of such a system is affecting the lives and peace of people and communities disaster resilience.
Description
Amrita’s new IoT (Internet of Things) system for landslides, being installed in Sikkim, is custom developed for Himalayan geology. It consists of over 200 sensors that can measure geophysical and hydrological parameters like rainfall, pore pressure, and seismic activity. It will monitor a densely populated area spanning 150 acres around Chandmari, Gangtok, Sikkim and provide early warning of imminent landslides using a multi level decision system integrated with artificial intelligence.
Outcomes
Successfully installed in North East Himalayan Region and Western Ghats. Real-time data collection from over 400 sensors, measuring geophysical and hydrological parameters, delivering early warnings, and improving disaster resilience for communities.
