Challenge
Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) are fundamental human needs and basic rights for all people. Unfortunately, 800 million people have an unmet need for clean water each day. Additionally, 2.4 billion people lack improved sanitation facilities, leading to thousands of child deaths and impoverishment. There is a critical need for sustainable solutions to address these issues as highlighted by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically SDG#6.
Description
The Pure Shores CPS uses solar power and salt to produce sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) to eradicate water-borne diseases. This approach not only provides safe drinking water but also serves multiple sanitation and hygiene needs, including medical and food preparation sterilization. It also features an innovative business model training women as water entrepreneurs to create a sustainable income source. Through extensive market research and testing, Pure Shores has proven to be a low-cost, large-scale intervention with high adoption rates and government support.
Outcomes
The project successfully provided safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and hygiene for over 254,000 lives across 11 countries. It proved especially effective in villages, with notable governmental support, and in emergency situations such as the Lusaka, Zambia cholera outbreak in 2016.
