Challenge
Three billion people burn biomass like charcoal and firewood inside their homes on traditional cookstoves to prepare their food each day. This practice harms the families who live in these households and our planet as a whole. This leads to 4 million deaths, mostly women and children, from illnesses attributable to household air pollution. Black carbon (BC) is the second largest contributor to global warming, and emissions from traditional cookstoves are a significant global source of BC.
Description
Powerstove brings smoke-free and off-grid electricity to those who need it by burning 70% less fuel. The TEG device converts heat energy to electricity to charge phones and power LED bulbs using the built-in USB and DC port, providing a convenient source of electricity in remote areas. Its built-in IoT system, lithium battery, and four-speed fan speed up cooking time, use much less fuel, lower carbon emissions, and allow monitoring over a cloud server.
Outcomes
3,800 users consuming 25 tons of biomass pellets monthly; demand growing by 8% monthly. Exporting first overseas order to the Philippines by Q1 2019.
