Challenge
In Papua New Guinea, corruption has been a significant issue affecting public trust and the effective use of resources. This initiative aims to address the widespread corruption in government departments and enhance transparency and accountability.
Description
The solution involves a text messaging system (SMS) that allows users to anonymously report cases of corruption. It has been prototyped with 1,200 staff in the Department of Finance and shown to be a safe, easy, and quick option for reporting corrupt practices.
Outcomes
The initiative has led to significant action against corruption, including the arrest of public officials and investigations of numerous corruption cases. It has been recognized with awards from the UNDP Regional Bureau for Asia-Pacific (RBAP) Innovation Fund Competition in 2014 and 2015.
