Challenge
The project addresses the need for clean birthing environments to reduce the risk of infections for mothers and infants, particularly in home births.
Description
The PATH Clean Delivery Kit is designed for use by skilled birth attendants, family members, and women who give birth unassisted in the home. PATH helped develop kits in countries including Bangladesh, Egypt, and Nepal, ensuring cultural acceptability and local customization. In Nepal, for instance, kits included a plastic rupee for cutting the umbilical cord.
Outcomes
The kits have helped reduce the risk of genital tract infections in women and umbilical cord infections in infants. Local businesses and organizations were enabled to produce and distribute the kits, leading to increased sales and long-term sustainability.
