Challenge
Worldwide, 1.2 Billion people don’t have access to electricity. In rural India, 1 in 3 households aren’t connected to the grid. Alternative solutions that exist in the market are expensive and many of the underprivileged cannot afford them. Instead, they rely on expensive, inefficient and dangerous alternatives such as kerosene for heating and lighting, which are not only detrimental to our health but also to our environment, education and livelihood.
Description
Our approach involves rebuilding the ecosystem by building a community center/solar kit production center which will serve as a community skill development center to train local women and men about renewable energy who will then earn their livelihood working at the production center. The trained solar engineers and the production center will primarily sustain itself by production and sales of solar products produced by this center to unelectrified communities worldwide.
Outcomes
The production center has a potential of impacting lives of 10 million people. A production center with 50 women can produce solar equipment to power lives of around 10,000 lives every month. In 10 years, with adding 50 more women every year, Orora can impact up to 500 women * 10,000 * 12 months * 10 years = 12 million people.
