OverviewContributors

Challenge

Accurate and early diagnosis of malaria infection, particularly urgent for children under age 5, in remote areas with limited access to advanced medical technology.

Description

The Smart Diagnostic Platform for Malaria (SDPM) is an all-in-one, portable diagnostic tool consisting of an automatic staining chip and optical diagnostic reader. It identifies Plasmodium infected red blood cells through machine-learning algorithms, automates steps of traditional Giemsa staining, and provides comprehensive diagnostic data.

SDGs

Clean Water and SanitationGood Health and Well-being

Outcomes

Successful development of a portable malaria diagnostic platform with 95% sensitivity and 95% specificity. Completion of clinical trials pending ethical approval in Cambodia and Malawi. Plans for national distribution in both countries post trials.
