OverviewContributors

Challenge

Potable water and water for agriculture and industries are becoming scarce due to climate change. Rising sea levels lead to scarce potable water, desertification, and loss of valuable land, affecting water availability for power plants providing electricity and heating. The real cost of water is rising due to reduced water levels in perennial rivers and flash floods. Even glaciers are melting untimely, leading to water scarcity in known safe potable resources and erratic monsoons.

Description

Existing technologies for processing potable water are high-cost, wasteful, and power-intensive. Our new technology does not need power, wastes no water, and can be implemented in weeks. It costs half of existing systems in both capital and operational costs and brings water to people at surface water costs globally. It provides local employment to women and farmers.

Outcomes

Successfully processed water from 2100 TDS to 100 TDS and seawater from 36200 TDS to 100 TDS. Transitioning to a system capable of processing 50000 liters per day to serve villages; scalable to millions of liters per day for towns and cities.
