Challenge
The high emergency mortality and morbidity rates and their associated costs are not only a socio-economic burden for many African countries but also a bottleneck to the realization of Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063. According to Uganda's Ministry of Health, despite high emergency tolls, less than 7% of patients arrive at health facilities by ambulance. This has been attributed to the absence of a formal Emergency Medical Service system (EMS).
Description
NAS, an on-demand emergency services response and a component of the all-in-one app Ogaget, has been developed to assist with the fastest access to emergency medical transport and immediate care that aligns with the budget of a patient. This platform addresses the current inaccessibility to emergency medical care due to lack of coordination, low capacity, unprofessionalism, and inadequate technical infrastructure in most African emerging countries.
Outcomes
The NAS has proven the concept of an on-demand and marketplace aggregation model in emergency medical services. It has demonstrated the willingness of government collaboration, integrated various verticals for economies of scale, and enhanced customer acquisition through referral features. It has also been integrated with Emergency Medicine Uganda for skills and professional development.
