Challenge
Nigeria accounts for about 14% of the global burden of maternal mortality and young girls bear the greatest share of this burden. This is largely because every year, almost one million teenage girls become pregnant in Nigeria and most of these pregnancies are unwanted and the result is the prevailing sexual abuse that occurs in one out of every four girls in Nigeria. Furthermore, 3.1 million Nigerians are infected with HIV (the second highest number worldwide), and young people aged 15-24 years account for 40% of all new infections.
