Mobile Applications to Secure Tenure (MAST)

Tanzania

MAST is a suite of tools for mapping and documenting land and resource rights. It combines an easy-to-use mobile phone mapping application with training and a participatory approach, with a particular focus on women and youth. MAST provides a low-cost, flexible alternative to traditional land administration services.

OverviewContributors

Challenge

Hundreds of millions of people around the world lack documented land rights. Lack of documentation weakens farmers’ and communities’ hold over their most important asset – land – disincentivizing critical long-term investments that improve harvests and lives.

Description

MAST integrates mobile applications and a web-based data management platform with participatory on-the-ground approaches. The mobile application enables field teams to collect spatial, attribute, and multimedia data about land parcels and natural resources. Data is collected and stored on mobile devices and transferred to a cloud-based platform for data processing and management.

SDGs

Decent Work and Economic GrowthGender EqualityNo Poverty

Outcomes

Secured land and resource rights in Tanzania, Burkina Faso, and Zambia.
