Challenge
Rural areas in India are electrified non-uniformly. If available it is for few hours in the evening time, resulting in darkness in the daytime. The condition of urban slum houses is worse due to lack of space. Many dwellers burn kerosene lanterns throughout the day or use electricity. In the absence of sunlight inside rooms, the children and women suffer from various diseases. In many parts of Europe, there is an act regarding the availability of a minimum of 4% sunlight inside living rooms.
Description
Micro Solar Dome provides light both during the daytime and nighttime. In the daytime, it acts as an Active Solar Device by providing light directly from the sunlight. In the nighttime, it provides light from the LEDs that are driven by the energy stored in the battery with the help of the integrated PV panels, thereby acting as a passive lighting device.
Outcomes
The project has been able to impact 1215 lives by providing clean and efficient lighting solutions in remote and slum areas. Additional benefits include reduced emissions of 27kg per month by a single 'Surya Jyoti', improved household lighting on a 24X7 basis, mobile charging facility, and acting as a room heater for cold regions.
