Liter of Light

Philippines

One billion people around the world suffer from energy poverty. Most proposed solutions bring technologies to energy-poor communities through top-down approaches, importing consumer models without turning over skills or ways to repair the technology. The Liter of Light Project teaches communities how to use recycled plastic bottles and locally sourced materials to illuminate their homes, businesses and streets. The Liter of Light redesigns solar lighting for the developing world, creating local jobs, teaching green skills, and empowering energy-poor communities. The project includes training local communities on building and installing solar lights using simple technologies and locally sourced materials. The primary business model involves training cooperative groups, primarily women, to build and sell the technologies at a retail price with a retainer fee to pay off the initial capital investment. The project also proposes a central recharging station business model for solar lamps.

Description

The Liter of Light teaches communities how to use recycled plastic bottles and locally sourced materials to illuminate their homes, businesses, and streets. It redesigns solar lighting for the developing world by creating local jobs, teaching green skills, and empowering energy-poor communities. Technologies are assembled by local communities and women's cooperatives to build solar LED night lights. The primary business model is training cooperative groups to build and sell the technologies; a secondary model is central recharging stations for solar lamps.
