LifePump

The LifePump is a new and innovative hand pump that solves the reliability and depth challenges of standard hand pumps. It is engineered to last years vs. months which improves sustainability by reducing O&M costs. It also reaches 100 meters, which is 2X the depth of standard pumps, and thus significantly reduces the number of dry boreholes which prevents disappointment and unnecessary drilling. The LifePump is ergonomically correct for women and children.

OverviewContributors

Challenge

Standard hand pumps often fail within months and cannot reach the depths required to access reliable water sources. This results in unsustainable water supplies, frequent maintenance, and dry boreholes, causing significant hardship for communities, especially women and children who often bear the burden of water collection.

Description

The LifePump, based on a Progressive Cavity Pump (PCP) design, addresses these challenges by providing a reliable and deep-reaching solution. It can reach depths of 100 meters with a minimum flow rate of nine liters per minute and has an estimated life expectancy of over 30 years, requiring minor maintenance only once every five years. Its engineering prevents catastrophic failures, ensuring continuous water supply.

Outcomes

LifePump has been successfully implemented in Ethiopia, Malawi, Kenya, and Zambia, significantly improving access to safe water. Community members have reported increased prosperity, including the ability to grow gardens, build homes, and send children to school. NGOs have shown interest in purchasing LifePumps due to their reliability and effectiveness.
