Challenge
The LAWIN system addresses the critical issue of forest and biodiversity degradation in the Philippines. Forest cover change for 780,000 hectares of key biodiversity areas was analyzed, conservation areas identified, and conservation objectives formulated to enhance Protected Area Management Plans.
Description
The innovative system employs science to formulate measurable conservation targets, automates data encoding, monitors patrol efforts, produces geo-referenced data, and enhances coordination between monitoring and law enforcement.
Outcomes
- Adoption of LAWIN as the national strategy for forest and biodiversity protection by the Philippine Government.
- Nationwide application in seven protected areas covering around 800,000 hectares.
- Positive trends of improved forest condition and reduced threats documented in protected areas.
- Training of government personnel nationwide to apply the system.
