Challenge
Low-income urban centers suffer from global energy poverty, especially street vendors in India. Lack of light limits their working hours and causes safety issues for women/children.
Description
Our team offers interconnected solar-power units that can be turned on/off remotely based on daily payment. The device includes a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panel, a Gelled electrolyte battery, charge controller, a GSM 2G/3G cellular data board, and a DC/AC inverter. The system supports 200Wh and runs for 2 days without solar recharging. The IoT aspect allows for affordable pricing in small daily installments.
Outcomes
Developed the IoT prototype within 3 months. Garnered popular peer votes and judges' appreciation at the Hult Prize Regional finals in Boston. Plan to continue prototype development and test in India.
