Challenge
Kidprint addresses the problem of accurately identifying people from birth through adulthood and at the same time providing basic tools for primary health screening. Reliable methods to identify infants and children and concurrently screen for medical conditions have historically been impossible. This lack of “cradle to grave” interoperable and persistent identification has significant impact on civil registration and health provision, and efficient provision of public services.
Description
We used human-centered design to reframe problem of infant ID and discovered the problem was a failure to account for infant physiology and interactions. We developed our platform from the ground up, iterating with infants and caregivers and have now combined off-the-shelf and cutting-edge technologies, to create the first extensible biometric platform for identity and medical screening, with an emphasis on health of children and families.
Outcomes
The KidPrint Ion device has been developed and tested extensively in the US & Mexico and we have detailed data on identification and re-identification. We have also tested it in the field in Mali and have numerous requests to field it elsewhere.
