Challenge

In January 2018, Bese Health Club (BHC) was founded in the Badihagwa-Hanuabada village. BHC was a pilot program to engage people in health promotion & education activities through a community initiated & run village fitness and training centre. The success of BHC after receiving sports equipment donations from Grass Skirt Project necessitated better facilities to store equipment & provide amenities for athletes.

Description

Through consultation with BHC users, the concept of a ‘Gym-In-A-Box’ (GIAB) was born; a shipping container converted in to a gym and community space. The GIAB is cost effective as it's built using recycled shipping containers, it is robust & secure due to steel construction, and it's able to be transported anywhere, allowing delivery of bulky & heavy gym equipment as well. The shipping container is retrofit with ventilation, solar panels to power lighting, and non-slip flooring for safety.
