OverviewContributors

Challenge

Since the start of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which caused 15,000 deaths, the UN-supported AICM Foundation has been concerned with the situation of women and children, focusing its activity on protection, access to healthcare/food, the prevention of infectious diseases, gender-based violence, and pathologies directly linked to the conflict. 1.2 million civilians, including 200,000 children living in the conflict zone, are suffering from the economic and conflict situation, responsible for many collateral victims.

Description

Since 2018, AICM committed with all the doctors present in the conflict zone to combat the anemia of all future mothers and the vitamin deficiency of all children under 5 years of age. The results appeared in the spring of 2019 with a 75% drop in pathological pregnancies (prematurity, mortality, birth defects) on 17,500 births. The particularity of this program is that it took place on both sides in the conflict and was accepted by 98% of women and 100% of gynecologists and pediatricians. It has enabled women and children living in a conflict zone, with limited access to hospitals, to have fewer health problems and to reduce the stress linked to economic difficulties and the bombing.
