Challenge
Farmers in rural areas often lack access to crucial market information and knowledge, leading to lower productivity, suboptimal sale prices, and ultimately, persistent poverty.
Description
Esoko is an information and communication platform for the agriculture, fishing and livestock sectors, using internet and mobile technologies along with a call center to connect smallholder farmers/fishermen with all the key players in the agriculture value chain and providing high quality information. Farmers have access to market information (price, bids and offers) and knowledge (weather information, agricultural best practices) allowing them to improve their productivity, reach optimal sale prices, increase their incomes and ultimately escape poverty. NGOs and governments can empower farmers through access to information, and capture and monitor information from the field to better meet the needs of producers and people living in rural areas. Input and tech dealers can market their products more efficiently. Buyers of agri products can improve their supply chain, reduce risks and improve products quality.
Outcomes
Esoko Mexico is providing information to close to 5,000 farmers and fishermen through CIMMYT and the Environmental Defense Fund. This has enabled these farmers to improve productivity, obtain better sale prices, increase incomes, and escape poverty. Esoko Mexico is currently raising a seed financing round of MXP$5 million to finance its development in Mexico. The impact of Esoko was proven by an assessment performed by New York University, which showed an average revenue increase of 9% for farmers who used the platform.
