Challenge
Open fire cooking represents the world’s largest environmental public health challenge, contributing to climate change, deforestation, disability, and mortality. Families currently cooking with biomass aspire to cook with gas but face price and availability barriers. Despite LPG being cleaner, safer, and more reliable, families can pay as much as 62% more to cook with charcoal but can’t pay for the upfront cost of buying LPG in bulk.
Description
Envirofit developed the SmartGas Service to make gas more accessible, affordable, and safe to use. Customers enroll in the SmartGas service. Envirofit service technicians safely install a gas cylinder with a SmartMeter in their home. Customers use mobile money to pay for gas in daily amounts. The SmartMeter dispenses fuel and turns off when credit is spent. When the cylinder is low, Envirofit is notified, and a customer care agent schedules the next cylinder delivery.
Outcomes
Increased access to affordable, safe, and clean cooking fuel for low-income families in urban areas; Reduced environmental and health impacts associated with open fire cooking.
