EMAS Water Supply Schemes

EMAS increases sustainability by providing people dependent to good water and sanitation, adding usefulness to the service. The core piece for good water quality is the EMAS do it yourself pump which has a pressure outlet and can pump water up to 100 meters. Sustainability comes from dependency on an added value like shower cubicle, solar water heater, water in the kitchen sink, drilled boreholes near the house, rain water harvesting near the house, improved hand dug wells etc.

Challenge

Governments and civil society organizations often lack the means to provide efficient water supply to the population in terms of investments and monitoring of existent systems. This project addresses this issue by empowering users to design and install their own water supply systems using locally available, cost-effective materials.

Description

The EMAS water self-supply approach is based on household water technologies which consist primarily of manual water pumps made from commonly available materials, hybrid percussion-jetting manual drilling techniques, and rainwater harvesting systems with underground storage tanks. Users are trained to install and maintain these systems, ensuring quality and reliability. The project also includes training local technicians and promoting the formation of cooperatives to encourage sustainable water supply solutions.
