Challenge
The cost of internet data is the main barrier to adoption of video learning in emerging markets, particularly in Africa. Traditional methods involve distributing tablets and servers, which are costly and less scalable.
Description
DOT LEARN utilizes vectorization technology developed at MIT to package educational videos into a format that consumes 1/100th the bandwidth of standard MP4 videos. This allows students with basic phones and poor internet connections to access educational content at minimal data costs.
Outcomes
Over 500 students signed up within three weeks of launching the beta version. Feedback is being collected to improve the app. Expected to reach tens of millions of students with minimal capital investment.
