Challenge
Key bottlenecks associated with the supply & demand of ORS & Zinc for childhood diarrhea were identified and addressed. These included lack of transportation, long distances to access points, regular stock-outs at rural health centres, low-awareness of the recommended combination therapy by HCWs, and more.
Description
By emulating the value-chains of companies like Coca-Cola - leveraging the same distribution channels used to supply their products to remote communities, and creating an innovative, profitable, demand-driven product based on human-centred design - access & use of this combination therapy were significantly improved, closer to home and more effectively.
Outcomes
1. Increased coverage of ORS and Zinc combination therapy in intervention districts from less than 1% to 47%.
2. Improved correct preparation of ORS from 60% to 93%.
3. Reduced average distance caregivers walked to access points from 7.3km to 2.4km.
4. Over 379,974 Kit Yamoyo distributed through public and private sector channels.
5. Estimated 83 lives saved in intervention districts.
6. Improved perception of ORS effectiveness.
7. Enhanced adherence to the 10-day zinc course.
