Challenge
617 million kids and youth around the world have not yet learned to read or do math, even though the majority of them attend school. The World Bank calls it the global learning crisis. The learning crisis means that while the vast majority of children now attend school, many of them do not learn what they need to while they are there. The enormous lack of learning that often causes kids to drop out of school early has enormous social and economic consequences for the kids and their families.
Description
Changing Stories runs accelerated learning courses (ALCs) for struggling public school students in Nepal. Each ALC lasts 90 lessons - 2 hours each, and takes place in a classroom at the project schools either before or after school hours. Local youth selected for the fellowship programme complete a 15-day long pre-service training, receive continuous guidance and support and take part in regular training and workshops throughout their fellowship. A curriculum has been designed to help fellows teach basic Nepali literacy and numeracy skills to their students. Lessons are built around group-based learning activities, learning through play, and the use of low-cost teaching materials.
Outcomes
Successfully completed 45 accelerated learning courses for 600 public school students in mid and western Nepal over the past 3 years. Developed a model that can be integrated into the existing public school system.
