HIVE is designed to disrupt how to finance nature by de-risking investments into businesses that protect, restore and manage our most at-risk ecosystems.
The facility addresses a systemic funding gap for nature-based solutions (NBS) and ecosystem restoration, targeting Southeast Asia's most at-risk landscapes where both biodiversity and under-served communities are under threat.
The scale of the problem is vast and multidimensional, with underinvestment in NBS globally estimated to be as high as $824 billion annually, a shortfall that is growing each year. This financial gap places severe constraints not only on efforts to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss but also on broader social and economic stability in the region. Women and marginalized groups are especially vulnerable: environmental degradation deepens existing inequalities, directly impacting food systems, livelihoods, and community resilience.
The disconnect between global investor appetite for NBS and the actual flow of capital to effective, community-embedded solutions exacerbates this crisis, leaving countless viable ventures and restoration opportunities unsupported. Without innovative funding and support mechanisms, the region faces escalating losses in ecosystem services, declining food security, increased social inequality, and missed opportunities for sustainable development.
Current funding models are often mismatched with early-stage NBS ventures whose needs are smaller and more locally grounded than typical institutional investment can accommodate. There is a strong tendency for funds to focus exclusively on carbon credits, while the broader economic, environmental, and social benefits of NBS are left unrecognized and unrewarded. The valuation of ecosystem services remains inadequate, with local businesses and community actors unable to capture the full suite of benefits their work generates. These intersecting factors perpetuate a cycle that impedes progress toward resilient landscapes and societies.
THE HIVE (Holistic Investments in Vital Ecosystems Blended Finance) Facility is a structured, multi-tiered financing and venture-building platform to address these pressing challenges at scale.
HIVE is made up of two pillars: (1) the HIVE Pipeline Builder, an evergreen facility funded by grants, and; (2) the HIVE Investment Facility, a close-ended investment facility.
This dual structure is specifically designed to overcome the five key macro-level constraints to the flow of nature finance: high minimum investment thresholds, a lack of investable pipeline, the shortage of risk-tolerant patient capital, an over-reliance on carbon finance, and an undervaluation of ecosystem services.
The HIVE Pipeline Builder provides early-stage finance (US $100K–$1M) and customized company-building support to nature positive ventures, particularly those focusing on food system transformation and ecosystem restoration. Terratai provides tailored services, including interim executive roles, strategic business support, and risk-tolerant working capital, to help new enterprises mature beyond the “valley of death” phases and attract larger follow-on investments. Funding will be sourced through a blend of grants from governments, foundations, and impact-driven investors, supplemented by venture-building fees and proceeds from equity positions.
The HIVE Investment Facility bridges the gap between early venture support and institutional readiness. Targeting proven NBS enterprises with at least $1M in annual revenue, this facility provides growth capital ($0.5M–$3M) and comprehensive strategic support. Utilizing a blended finance structure, with both senior and junior investment tranches, the facility diversifies risks and returns to draw in a wide array of investors, including those seeking both attractive and below-market returns.
This flexible, systems level approach seeks to unlock the latent flow of global finance into high-impact solutions, fostering sustainable economic transition, improved gender equity, and climate resilience in Southeast Asia.
Investing in and scaling over 100 nature-positive ventures across Southeast Asia, driving the protection of more than 3 million hectares of at-risk ecosystems, creating over 10,000 of green jobs, and advancing gender equity by empowering women-led enterprises.
