Description

We imagine a world where Wealth Hackers are encouraged to develop and launch their innovative solutions, supported through a combination of financial and social capital, and connected to an aligned community of changemakers.

To support this vision, WHI offers the Hacking Wealth Challenge to accelerate promising wealth redistribution projects that can be significantly advanced with funding and participation in our collaborative cohort.

Types of projects

Eligible projects develop innovative approaches to wealth redistribution, and include but are certainly not limited to:

  • Building a prototype of a product or service that supports funding to move more effectively

  • Adapting an existing intervention to another jurisdiction or language

  • Conducting applied research for a wealth redistribution initiative

  • Developing legal, policy, or advocacy proposals that enable funding to move towards social and environmental outcomes

  • Creating novel financial vehicles or cooperative resourcing structures

Eligible projects are sprints, not ongoing bodies of work. The funding from the Hacking Wealth Challenge helps them to get from 0 to 1, or reach a next phase or milestone. The funding is “but for”, and intended to provide the spaciousness to achieve a meaningful next outcome.

Collaborative Funding Model

The cohort of 2025/26 wealth hackers will collectively decide how to allocate a total pool of GBP 150,000 through a facilitated democratic process. This approach ensures that funding decisions align with the Wealth Hacker Initiative’s community values.

The Challenge prize purse is a finite pool, and the assumption is that the funding allows selected projects to achieve a stepwise improvement or milestone by offsetting some of your or some of your team’s time and related expenses to get to that next phase. We imagine this to be on the order of one or two months of full time equivalent effort.

Your Commitments

Participating in the Hacking Wealth Challenge means:

Frequently asked questions

Are there reporting requirements?

There are no formal reporting or communication requirements to receive or maintain funding. However, we expect at least one representative per group to join monthly virtual calls and attend the in-person gathering to build community and peer support among hackers. No formal written reports are required.

What will I need to provide in the application?

The application is concise and requires: Creating a profile for yourself and organization (if applicable) Describing your hack (approximately 1,000 words) Explaining what the funding will enable you to accomplish Answering short questions about location, industry, projected outcomes, etc.

Are there deadlines for completing my hack?

We expect all Challenge Winners to reach a significant milestone to share at the next in-person Liberating Wealth Gathering. However, we follow a trust-based philanthropy approach—while we hope for meaningful progress, receiving and maintaining funds isn’t contingent on achieving specific results or deliverables.

Do I have to share my hack publicly?

We do ask that the Wealth Hacker Initiative team is able to share your participation and the existence of your hack with the broader community of practice and in online materials. We will work with you on the appropriate level of detail to share, given considerations around privacy and security, effectiveness of the hack, and commercial considerations. We do not expect you to give away your hacks for free, or to open-source them.

Can I apply as an individual?

Yes! We encourage you to apply in whatever capacity feels most aligned with your project—as an individual, a team of collaborators, representing your organization, or as a coalition.

Can I submit an existing project?

Yes, you can both submit projects that are already ongoing and ready to grow to the next phase, and projects that have not yet begun. In the flow for describing your project you'll have the option to add a start date that can be in the past, present or future.

What if I don't have or know all the project details yet?

The project information is generic to the Innovation Exchange, not specific to the Wealth Hacker Challenge. As such, please fill in all the required fields marked with an asterisk * For other fields, use your best guesses, for example, you can use a start and end date in the future, and if you haven't made a project budget yet, leave it empty or put in your best guess.

What qualifies as a "Hack"?

We’re looking for ways to subvert or reclaim existing mainstream instruments to shift systems toward a just and equitable future. The focus is on scalable interventions that go against the current system’s grain to rewire how capital moves and flows. Example hacks across five key domains: Legal/Governance: “Trust-busting” instruments for wealth expression, redefining “fiduciary duty” beyond private accumulation, alternative approaches to wealth guardianship Financial: Inclusive and democratic investment decision-making models, client service models prioritizing repair and redistribution, alternative fund designs building community wealth Digital: Spend-down redistribution modeling tools, holistic financial planning technology, platforms supporting alternative economy investments Accounting: Reimagined P&L capturing all forms of value, tax/regulatory policy reform, tax planning prioritizing redistribution through solidarity Behavioural: Tools for wealth holders to redirect wealth and manage family dynamics, alternative stakeholder governance approaches Think of Buckminster Fuller’s trim tab concept: a tiny rudder on a ship’s main rudder that moves first and causes the entire vessel to turn. Similarly, hacks are specific, small innovations with the capacity to turn the massive Wealth Defence Industry toward justice.
